It's raining heavily outside and you can't bear the thought of getting out of your car to go open the garage door, maybe it's time to get a garage opener system. A garage opener system or garage door opener is a motorized device designed to open and close garage doors. This device makes it easy and convenient to open and close your garage door, and it also enhances safety and home security.
What Types of Garage Opener Systems are Available?
Brands such as LiftMaster, Linear, Chamberlain, Marantec, Genie, and Manaras manufacture different types of garage door openers, each with its own pros and cons. Knowing the different types before buying is essential, they include:
- Chain-drive - They employ a metal chain to drive the trolley that raises and lowers the door. These types are economical, however, they tend to be noisy and vibrate during operation.
- Belt-drive - Their operation is similar to that of chain-drives with the difference being that they use a belt in place of a metal chain. This distinction allows them to be quiet and smooth during operation. They are ideal for homes.
- Screw-drive - They move the lifting mechanism with the help of a threaded steel rod. The rod rotates clockwise or anti-clockwise to open or close the door. Their reduced moving parts allow for quiet operation and easy maintenance.
- Direct-drive - In these types, the motor itself functions as the trolley and moves along the track, lowering or raising the door. The result is an ultra-quiet device with only a single moving part; this also makes garage door repair easier.

Similar to other electrical and electronic devices, manufacturers have integrated a lot of useful technological features in garage door openers. Depending on your budget and needs, you may find the following features:
- Smart-device compatibility - manufacturers such as Liftmaster have applications that you can install in your smartphone or smart device. For instance MyQ, an application by Liftmaster, allows you to remotely control, get status notifications and set schedules.
- Auto-close functionality - closes the door after a pre-programmed amount of time.
- Battery backup - allows you to continue operating the door even after power outage.
- Miniature key-chain remotes - there are door controllers that fit in your pocket.
- Motion-sensing security lights - allows security light activation upon your arrival with the help of a motion sensor.
- Soft Start/Stop motors - they reduce wear and tear and also make closing and opening smoother.
Other features to look out for might be smart home automation, built-in wireless, and keyless entry.

All electronic or automatic garage doors have a bypass that will allow you to open it manually. This becomes necessary when there is a power failure or, for some reason, you lose your remote. The bypass disconnects the door from the powered carriage, but it stays on the track. Once you disconnect it, you can then lift it manually. When the power comes back on or you locate your lost remote, you can lock the bypass and use the door normally again.
- Place a ladder under the chain that operates the garage door. Locate a red cord hanging from a bracket on the chain. These cords are almost always red, but if there is only one cord and it's not red, it's probably the right one. The cord will have a plastic red knob on the end. Most often, the cord is located close to the door.
- Jerk on the cord using the knob. The cord is hooked onto a small lever. The lever may be tilted at a 15-degree angle or pointing straight down. You will feel that the lever is spring-loaded; pull the cord until the lever locks in the down position. Step down from the ladder.
- Grab the door with both hands and lift it. If the door will not budge, pull the cord harder until it locks open. If the door is too heavy for you to lift, don't hurt yourself. Get an assistant to help you lift it.
- Do not let go of the door once it's off the ground. It is free on the track and it will fall if you let go. Prop the door open using a two-by-four or have someone hold the door open for you while you drive your car in or out. When you're finished with the door, ease it down by hand.
- Pull down on the cord hard to lock it in place again after the power comes back on or you find your remote. Pull on the cord and watch as the bracket slips back into the chain bracket, locking the door into the powered carriage. Try the remote. If the door won't open, but the chain is moving, pull on the chain again until the bracket locks. Test and pull the cord again if necessary to lock it.
Tip
Keep the rollers and chain lubricated on your garage door. It makes the door operate quiet, and makes the chain and all moving parts last longer because they operate with less friction.
Keep your owner's manual on hand. Consult it first before tinkering with your door.
Warning
Never pull the bypass cord if the door is stuck in the open position. The door will come crashing down with enough force to damage anything that gets in its way.
